Vampire Bats Use The Sound Of Victim's Breath When Hunting

The Bats are able to hear and remember the unique pattern of an individulas breath a new study has found.
It is well known that Vampire bats feed only on blood, and when they find a victim they like, they will repeatedly return to that same source to feed on it for consecutive nights.

So how is it a mammal that is believed to have a ‘well developed’ sense of smell, able to track down an exclusive feed with such accuracy?

Apparently their brain cells are stimulated exclusively by the sound of breathing thus making their ears the unsuspecting tool of their trade. Add to this the ability to be able to differentiate between breathing sounds and patterns and then memorize them, you a have clever creature that isn’t going hungry at night!

Studies have shown that trained bats were able to identify the sounds of human breathing, from three individual subjects, making no mistake in knowing which sound belong to each subject. Funnily enough humans weren’t able to do the same thing.

So it seems these creatures have one over us humans, and along with their sense of smell, they are able to make us their prey night after night. If you think you can lie in bed and change the sounds you make when you are breathing to fool them then think again. We humans are unable to change our breathing pattern whilst asleep, so to avoid repeat attacks, you’ll need to come up with your own solution. Sleep tight!

Sandra Brue’s method for creating her sculptures starts with becoming intimate with the animal itself. Trips to the San Diego zoo are not uncommon when starting a new piece, even to the extent that she sat inside the enclosure with a giant hippopotamus, only six feet away, whilst sculpting.
Sandra uses an oil-based clay that never hardens to create the original, and she will make several trips back and forth to ensure the sculpture is just right. Then she adds the hairs, one by one, an extremely time consuming affair, and just before the piece is ready for casting, she will carve her name “BRUE” to ensure authenticity.
After hand-pouring a cast stone mixture, the sculpture is checked for quality before it is hand painted using both bristle and air brushing. Finally, specially crafted glass eyes that appear real enough to create the feeling that the animal is looking at you, are inserted into the sculpture.

Bird Beats Worm, And Returns To Do It Again And Again - Is This Normal?

I had the experience of seeing a bird completely tenderize a worm the other day, only to fly off, return and do it again repeatedly, and wanted to know if this was normal behaviour.

Sitting in a car park, waiting to pick up my children from school, I noticed some movement within some trees.

A bird (I don't know what species) had found a worm and whilst hanging on to it with it's beak, continuously bashed it into a peice of the pine wood fence it was perched upon.

After a while the worm appeared to be a lot longer and very lifeless, and the bird flew up into a tree about 30 yards away.

Then the weird part happened. After a short period of time, the bird flew back to the fence it was previously on and starting bashing the worm again.

Why did it pick that spot again when there was plenty of fence nearer to it's nest? I guessed the repeated bashings (and I mean it returned to the fence 4 times) were simply because the worm hadn't died or was not tender enough yet, but why fly all the way back to that particular spot?

I was intrigued and watched this event take place with such intensity, I didn't even notice my kids had piled into the van.

Collectors Of Wildlife Figurines Will Often Be A Reflection Of The Animal They Collect

A passionate collector can depict a sense of what makes them who they are by simply surrounding themselves with an animal that displays the same attributes in the wild.

Wildlife figurines are being sought after by a large cross section of society and one has to wonder what makes collecting wildlife figurines such a popular past time. It could be assumed that people feel a sense of emptiness when they think of how quickly the habitat of the earth's wildlife is diminishing, or they feel in awe of an animal or birds unique presence in the wild. Either way they feel an attachment and decide to surround themselves with wildlife figurines, art, sculptures, decor and so on. So if this is the case, then how does one choose the animal? Well I believe in most cases they don't, the animal chooses them.

Its obvious to me that the material used to make a wildlife figurine does not seem to matter as much as the actual animal itself. When people come to our site searching for wildlife figurines, rarely do they search for the form or material along with the animal, and I think it’s because people are what they collect.

Eagles display authority in the air, and are seen this way, so a collector of eagle figurines may have a deep sense of gratitude towards authority or be an authoritarian themselves. The eagle is also known as the American eagle in North America and so a collector of American eagle figurines may feel a deep sense of patriotism.

A Dolphin has intellect and some people will see them this way, along with a sense of playfulness and willingness to swim with people. Collectors of dolphin figurines may themselves be playful or easy to get along with or admire intelligence.

Elephants display a strong desire to stay within their groups and have a strong family sense. They also mourn their losses, so a collector of elephant figurines may see family as their biggest priority in life and admire the elephant for doing the same.

Prehistoric 'Beaver' Found
Scientists are calling it the Jurassic 'Beaver'

164 million years ago lived a small hairy, flat tailed, beaver like creature measuring about 17 inches (43 centimeters), with limbs and webbed feet adapted for swimming.
A well-preserved fossil mammal has been discovered in northeastern China, and has now been classed as the oldest swimming mammal ever found, and the oldest known animal preserved with fur.

This find is lucky as it is almost a complete skeleton with well-preserved teeth, and even intact middle ear bones, but more significant, the fur and soft tissue are also fossilized.

The tail is covered in hair along the entire length, and similar to modern beavers, the tail bones are very flat and compressed, and because there are signs of soft tissue between the toes of the back feet suggesting they were webbed, it was probably a specialized swimmer.

Until now, the most back dated mammal fossil finds with fur were about 125 million years old, and examples of these were the Eomaia scansoria. This new found species is being called Castorocauda lutrasimilis, and roughly translated means "beaver tailed and looks like a river otter" (where do they get these names?!).

Although refered to as a mammal, it isn't really such, and is more of a predecessor of the modern mammals we affectionately know as the platypus and echidna. Scientists call these mammaliaforms or basal mammals.

According to John Roach from the National Geographic News, if Polar Bears make the U.S. Endangered list, they will be the first U.S. mammals officially deemed to be in danger of extinction due to global warming. This is a scary thought as the plight of our wildlife is already at wits end.

But it's not just the Polar Bear's whose livelihoods and natural habitats are being withered away at alarming rates, it's happening all around the world. There is a real call for financial help from anywhere and everywhere and that includes individuals and small business.

WildFigurines.com has been contributing to the World Wildlife Fund's cause since the business began last year, by donating 10% of every wildlife figurine sale, and even more for the month of January due to slow sales. "January is always the quiet time of the year for business owners, which is why we made a larger than the normal 10% donation", says the owner of WildFigurines.com Dean Whittingham. "We believe it's important to give more when you know most people will usually give less."

WildFigurines.com is an online store for wildlife lovers and Dean, being a wildlife lover himself, is worried that the environment and it's inhabitants has never seen a time as tough as this ever since man walked the earth. Without financial aid the study of the Wild including Polar Bears, would not exist to the level that is needed to even know that a problem is there. What most people don't realize is that as small as a donation may seem, they all add up.

The Polar Bear is calling to all with a heart, to give generously and help the many organizations out there, who spend their valuable time understanding the changes in the environment, the impact it's having on wildlife, and the possible solutions needed to prevent the extinction of some of mother's natures most precious assets - Her Wildlife.

WWF Made Huge Advances in Amazon Protection in 2005In 2002, WWF launched the Amazon Region Protected Areas (ARPA) initiative, which has already protected 24.7 million acres of Brazilian rain forest with another 14.8 million set aside for sustainable use. Last year, our biological survey of a remote section of the Amazon and our negotiating expertise came together in the creation of the Alto Purús complex in Peru. Alto Purús is the final piece of an 81.5 million-acre conservation corridor stretching for nearly 700 miles through the Amazon. Additionally, WWF's studies formed the technical and scientific basis for the creation of an additional 7.5 million-acre mosaic of protected areas in Brazil. Thanks to the support of members like you, we hope to see more great successes in the Amazon in the years to come.

The Face Of Business Is Changing. Going Are The Days Where Businesses Are Focused On Profits And Shareholders, And Growing Are The Businesses That Are Enlightened

This means if your business is about giving back, you are part of a wonderful new wave.

For those of you wondering what on earth I’m talking about, let’s just start by exploring the old fashioned corporation in its simplest (yet probably harshest) form.

A business is born with the idea of providing a product or service. Investors are invited to invest capital and share in the profits of the business, unless of course you’re a Mom and Pop business.

The main objective for an investor, is the return on investment, so the main objective for the business operator is to keep the investor happy, which means achieving the highest possible profits. If you’re a Mom and Pop business, the main objective is to make a living.

Now, when you hear people criticize capitalism, usually it’s not because the business is trying to achieve maximum profits, but the lengths to which business operators will go in order to achieve this. Once again this is in its harshest form, but some of these lengths will include, downsizing, environmental damage, animal cruelty, and even extreme cases, turning to crime.

It is a concern for many that when a business’s primary concern is profit, then a price will have to paid somewhere else down the line, and this is where the old argument of one winner, one loser is so prevalent.

So what is enlightened? Well enlightened is now one of my favorite words and it basically means that in order to receive, you must first give. So how does one give first? Well the answer has more to do with your reasons for being in business.

If your sole reason for being in business is for profit, then it’s very hard for you to give anything until you have made a profit. But if your business is about helping others, then you can’t but help to give first.

Let’s try thinking about it from a different angle. If you found a cure for cancer, do you think you’re going to become rich? You bet your backside you will, but really, is that why someone works night and day in a laboratory, spinning test tubes and whatever else, just so that one day they might strike it rich? Of course not, it’s the drive to do something wonderful to help the world.

Whether you are religious or not, people are understanding more and more that life is not about economics and profits, but more about helping a common cause, and that is to make everybody’s lives on this little blue planet, that much easier. For me personally, I also think that life is about learning, not earning.

We’re going to use an example of an enlightened business. First of all, this business is a retailer of products and so on the surface, it would look like any other business. But look deeper and you see that the concern of the owner is to enlighten the customer so that the customer feels there is a benefit to them, rather than being told how great the business is or how long it’s been established.

The next thing is that the customer feels they are welcome because it is their wants that are the primary focus. The owner is explaining to the customer, the benefits of the product, and how it is going to make a difference in their life. Most of the time, the customer is not concerned with how long you’ve been in business, how many miles you have traveled, or the painstaking hours involved in finding or making this product.

When you care about the customer first, you are most definitely on the way to being enlightened.

A customer is looking for an animal figurine, and after a short search, they find your store. ‘Great’, they think, and once they've made their purchase they decide to bookmark your site because you had what they wanted. They enjoyed the experience, and they became loyal.

This scenario is what most business owner’s want, and it is ultimately the basis for building an asset. But what happens over time is that life changes and so do people, regardless of their initial loyalty.
